“Angels Among Us”
I was walking home from school, on a cold winter day
Took a shortcut through the woods, and I lost my way
It was getting late, and I was scared and alone
But then a kind old man, took my hand, and led me home
Mama couldn’t see him, oh but he was standing there
And I knew in my heart, he was the answer to my prayers
Oh I believe there are, angels among us
Sent down to us, from somewhere up above
They come to you and me, in our darkest hours
To show us how to live, to teach us how to give
To guide us with the light of love
When life held troubled times, and had me down on my knees
There’s always been someone, to come along, and comfort me
A kind word from a stranger, to lend a helping hand
A phone call from a friend, just to say, I understand
But ain’t it kind of funny, at the dark end of the road
That someone lights the way, with just a single ray of hope
Oh I believe there are, angels among us
Sent down to us, from somewhere up above
They come to you and me, in our darkest hours
To show us how to live, to teach us how to give
To guide us with the light of love
They wear so many faces, show up in the strangest places
To grace us with their mercy, in our time of need
Oh I believe there are, angels among us
Sent down to us, from somewhere up above
They come to you and me, in our darkest hours
To show us how to live, to teach us how to give
To guide us with the light of love
To guide us with a light of love
Alabama

Did I miss anyone? I hope not! That was hard. Assuming you’re getting a handle on this thing, you might have a few of the same names on your list that I have. I bet you do!! Well I’ll be damn. I’ve once was lost but now I’m found, I was blind but now I see. All these people mentioned above helped me in some way. Some of them I didn’t even like at first. One name comes to mind, Chester, P. He will know who I’m talking about immediately, because we talked about it. We worked together for four years, four of the best years of my life. I met some of the finest people at this place, and learned so much from this company, a company that has been around for years. They taught me how to work with other people, and to always treat people with respect. And this was long before everyone was offended by everything. That taught team system, m.c.e, and they took care of their employees with benefits, and free health check-ups, and even after they shutdown, they gave us a severance, or offered us other jobs.
No one asked them too. They just knew it was the right thing to do. And they did it. No one held a gun to their head. Yet this company has been vilified over the years. I spent many years with bitter feelings for them. The reason you ask, one of my best friends was killed in the factory where we worked. He was like a brother to me and one of the best people I’ve ever met. I was a pall bearer at his funeral. It ruined his family’s life from what I heard. Steve and Dixon probably saved my life. Dixon was Steve’s best friend a friend I grew up with, Chris we all used to party all the time. And I do mean ALL the time, every day, every chance we got. And you know what? That shit was fun! I was 22 or 23 or 25 or was it 26? Like the songs says….I had blood shot eyes at 25 or was it 26, thought I would die at 25 or was it 26, I’m glad to say I’ve come around, but if I could have one wish, I’d like another try at 25 or was it 26?…Chris Stapleton.
What’s my point? What if I didn’t have a point? Because everything is really pointless, what if everything was upside down??????? What the fuck? Sometime you just gotta say it. Isn’t that correct Tom? So my point is this….think, think, think, for your fucking self. Listen, read, watch, relax, take time to enjoy life, do what you enjoy, never let someone tell you what to do, that doesn’t mean don’t listen. Listen, think about it, sleep on it, ask for input. The more involved in the decision process the better. Amen! But you have the final decision and don’t be afraid to make it. What’s the worst thing that can happen? The world ends?? You piss someone off? You hurt someones feeelinnngsss?? You fail?????
Read the poem If. Don’t have it handy? Let me get it for you. I’m here to help.
If—
BY RUDYARD KIPLING
(‘Brother Square-Toes’—Rewards and Fairies)
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!
Your welcome! I love that stuff. I ask you this, who can read that and not feel better, is that the word I’m looking for???? Uplifted, inspired, fired up, ready to beat the world, Cool Hand Luke, you world beater you. What a great actor Paul Newman was, simply awesome. And Redford, Travolta, Costner, Pitt, Crews, Douglas, Hanks, Jackson, Murray, Belushi, Johnson, Russell, Kilmer, Willis, Phoenix, Weatherspoon, Sheffer, Skerritt, Fields, Roberts, and the list goes on……….
Do you see my point? Me either but I thought I’d ask. What do all those people above have in common? Great actors? Sure that was easy. What else????
But that in smoke and pipe it! I know the answer and some of you do too! Just like the song says….Angels Among Us….who sang that song btw, oh a group called ALABAMA??? Randy who?? From where??? ALA-Freakin-BAMA!
Oh, I knew that would piss all you haters off. We are stupid un-educated red-necks. We are narrow-minded hicks, who don’t wear shoes….yet some of the greatest singers, songwriters, leaders, politicians, and some of the finest people I know.
Who else has a state song like Sweet Home Alabama written by Ronnie Van Zant from Florida, recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. It’s sung at baseball games, football games, used in movies, and commercials. Every time I hear it I want to stand up and celebrate. Who else has Hank, Hank Jr, Bear, Nick, Joe, Snake, Gene, Julio, Derek, Bart, Jake, A.J., George, Wayne, Stan, Johnny, Dwight, John, T.J., Joe Willie, and Forrest???lol And let’s not forget Cam, Shug, Bo, Pat, Pat, Terry, Stan, Gene, John, and it never ends.
Here’s your chance. Yes, you have great ones too! The point?? Again you ask. My point is everyone is the same but different. And I believe that’s a good thing. And I like good things. And guess what sometimes I even like bad things.
I don’t know ask someone who knows….
Thorn in My Pride
Lyrics
Wake me when the daybreak
Show me how the sunshine
Tell me about your heartache
Who could be so unkind
Do you dream to touch me
And smile down deep inside
Or could you just kill me, hey
It’s hard to make up your mind, sometimes
My angels, my devils, a thorn in my pride
My angels, my devils, a thorn in my pride
Are you wanting inspiration
You spill your secrets on me
Then you tell me with a whisper
Of things that will never be
Do you hear me breathing
Does it make you want to scream
Did you ever like a bad dream?
Hey, sometimes life is obscene
My angels, my devils, a thorn in my pride
My angels, my devils, they were thorn in my pride
My angels, my devils, a thorn in my pride
My angels, my devils, thorn in my pride
Lover cover me with your sleep
Let your love light shine, let it shine
Lover cover me with a good dream
Oh, let your love light, oh let your love light shine
Oh, I want to know, do you ever want to let it shine
Do you ever want to let it shine, baby
Your love light, your love light, listen
Lover cover me with your sleep
Let your love light shine, let it shine
Lover cover me with a dream
Let your love light shine, let it shine
Lover cover me with your sleep
Let your love light shine, let it shine
Angels, my devils, in the thorn in my pride
Angels they, devils they, a thorn in my pride
My angels, my devils, my thorn in my pride
Angels they, devils, they’re a thorn in my pride
Pride, a thorn in my pride
I know you’re still wondering what the point is, right? What was the question again???
The point is it’s all good!! And it’s all bad!!! It’s what you make it. Acceptance it the key…
Page 417 Acceptance
A.A. Big Book – Acceptance is the answer to ALL of my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing or situation- some fact of my life- unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing, or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment. Nothing, absolutely nothing, happens in God’s world by mistake. Until I could accept my alcoholism, I could not stay sober; unless I accept my life completely on life’s terms, I cannot be happy. I need to concentrate not so much on what needs to be changed in the world as on what needs to be changed in me and in my attitudes.
Gotcha!! I can’t even begin to tell you how much fun I’m having right now. I feel like I could do anything!! Superman….Iron Man…Batman….all rolled into one. Want this feeling? Read the book.
Which book? I’ll let you decide. Just read a damn book, please. You just mind learn something. I did!
Have a nice life. I fully intend too! Am I done yet? I have no freakin-idea………….
But, and there is always a but….For today let me sign off with this………..
She Talks To Angels
The Black Crowes
She never mentions the word addiction
In certain company.
Yes, she’ll tell you she’s an orphan
After you meet her family.
She paints her eyes as black as night now.
Pulls those shades down tight.
Yeah, she gives me a smile when the pain comes.
The pain gonna make everything alright.
Says she talks to angels.
They call her out by her name.
Oh yeah, she talks to angels.
Says they call her out by her name.
She keeps a lock of hair in her pocket.
She wears a cross around her neck.
Yes, the hair is from a little boy,
And the cross from someone she has not met, well, not yet
Says she talks to angels.
Says they all know her name.
Oh yeah, she talks to angels.
Says they call her out by her name.
She don’t know no lover,
None that I ever seen.
ZAC BROWN BAND LYRICS
“Beautiful Drug”
I got a death wish
Her looks can kill
She’s got a red dress
Lipstick and heels
Pull me in, get me hooked like a junkie
You got me feeling so high
You’re such a beautiful drug
I can’t get enough
Addicted and I’m dying for a hit of your love
Got a death wish baby, baby
Don’t want you to save me, save me
She lets her hair down
And all of mine stand up
Can’t help but stare now
Gotta feel that touch
Her kiss, my fix, so sweet
Can’t quit those lips are a habit to me
Sweet intoxication and I’m never getting sober
I can tell that the effects are taking over
Pull me in, get me hooked like a junkie
You got me feeling so high
You’re such a beautiful drug
I can’t get enough
Addicted and I’m dying for a hit of your love
Got a death wish baby, baby
Don’t want you to save me, save me
Tonight
Whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa
You’re such a beautiful drug
I can’t get enough
I’m addicted and dying for a hit of your love
I’m losing it, baby
Keep driving me crazy, crazy
Going out of my mind
Staring at you
Burning up in your fire that I’ve fallen into
Got a death wish baby, baby
Don’t want you to save me, save me
Tonight
Whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa
And this..
Hurt
Johnny Cash
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that’s real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
[Chorus:]
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar’s chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here
[Chorus:]
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
So maybe it’s all the same…
BROOKS & DUNN LYRICS
“Believe”
Old man Wrigley lived in that white house
Down the street where I grew up
Momma used to send me over with things
We struck a friendship up
I spent a few long summers out on his old porch swing
Says he was in the war when in the navy
Lost his wife, lost his baby
Broke down and asked him one time
How ya keep from going crazy
He said I’ll see my wife and son in just a little while
I asked him what he meant
He looked at me and smiled, said
[Chorus]
I raise my hands, bow my head
I’m finding more and more truth in the words written in red
They tell me that there’s more to life than just what I can see
Oh I believe
A few years later I was off at college
Talkin’ to mom on the phone one night
Getting all caught up on the gossip
The ins and outs of the small town life
She said oh by the way son, old man Wrigley’s died.
Later on that night, I laid there thinkin’ back
Thought ’bout a couple long-lost summers
I didn’t know whether to cry or laugh
If there was ever anybody deserved a ticket to the other side
It’d be that sweet old man who looked me in the eye, said
[Chorus]
I raise my hands, bow my head
I’m finding more and more truth in the words written in red
They tell me that there’s more to life than just what I can see
I can’t quote the book
The chapter or the verse
You can’t tell me it all ends
In a slow ride in a hearse
You know I’m more and more convinced
The longer that I live
Yeah, this can’t be
No, this can’t be
No, this can’t be all there is
[Chorus]
When I raise my hands, bow my head
I’m finding more and more truth in the words written in red
They tell me that there’s more to life than just what i can see
I believe
Oh, I
I believe
I believe
I believe
I believe
I believe
And I do too! I believe in a lot of things. You remember in the movie Bull Durham..and Crash Davis…
“Well, I believe in the soul, the cock, the pussy, the small of a woman’s back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.”
Ditto! For 99.9%. At least he believes in something and has the guts to say it.
What do you believe in asshole? Are you speaking to me??? Thought you would never ask.
I believe in Baseball, hot dogs, Coke, Ford, Alabama, Nick Saban, Bear Bryant, Zac, Ronnie Regan, church, country, God, and myself. That’s the short list!
I believe in marriage, between a man and a woman. Said the wrong thing they didn’t I, now we know. I also believe I have a right to say that and you also have a right to do whatever the fuck you want too. But, I would like to ask you a favor. You leave me out of it. I will treat you with respect and I expect the same thing. I will no longer be held hostage or made feel guilty for having an opinion. If you don’t like it, frankly I don’t give a damn. I have the same fucking rights as you, under the constitution of the United States. I will leave you alone. I will simply ignore you when you’re not around. Give me a hug big guy! Bring it in here. So, let’s agree to disagree. Please, and thank you!
Have a nice day! Cause if you parents didn’t teach you anything, maybe I can! I am a father you know. And Father knows best.
